Famous Lesbians in History

Sunday November 16, 2003
When I came out as a lesbian, I looked all around for signs of others who had walked the same path. I wondered what other women in history had loved other women. Was Emily Dickinson a lesbian? What about Eleanor Roosevelt? Sappho? I wanted to learn more about Boston Marriages and those rugged pioneer women and cowgirls of the past. The thing about personal lives, is that sometimes you just never know. But that doesn't stop historians from trying to speculate and figure out what went on in the bedrooms and hearts of our ancestors. I think it's important that we recognize that lesbian and bisexual women have come before us, paving the path for us to live our lives out in the open.
