Fight Racism in the LGBTQ Community
Sunday January 18, 2004
Today, Monday January 19th, we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we fight our battles for gay and lesbian rights, we remember the long battle that Dr. King fought for people of color. We must remember that biotry affects us all. Just as Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay, James Bird was murdered for being Black. Just as queer people fear walking down the street hand-in-hand, many people of color fear driving through certain sections of town. Just as gays and lesbians fear losing their jobs if their sexual orientation is found out, people of color are denied promotions based on the color of their skin. It seems surprising, then, when gays and lesbians discriminate based on the color of one's skin. Yet, prejudice exists within the GLBT community. On this day that celebrates the life of one of America's hero's, please join me in the fight against Racism in the LGBT community.
