Are Men Obsolete?

Monday April 26, 2004
Many lesbian couples are having children, either through adoption or artificial insemination. Yet, unlike heterosexual couples, two women cannot have the genes of both parents passed on to their children. How often do you hear things like this? "She has her dad's hair, but her mom's nose." Imagine if a lesbian could say, "She has Jackie's eyes, but unfortunately, my ears!" Well, you may at some point in the future. Scientists in Japan have created mice babies with no male mouse or even sperm involved. Taking genetic material from two female mice, they have created a litter and at least one of those has lived to adulthood and had little mice babies of her own. What can this mean for lesbians? Will we soon be able to have children with our female partners?
