Transsexual Athletes at the Olympics
Monday August 23, 2004
Although I consider myself a supporter of transgender rights, something I had never considered before was the rights of transsexuals to compete in sports. I wonder is it fair for a trans woman to compete against other women? Will she be stronger or faster? The International Olympic Committee looked into this issue and decided that not allowing transsexuals to compete is discrimination. Should we not allow a tall woman to compete in basketball because she has an advantage over the shorter women? We would never consider that! Perhaps this is the same reasoning that the IOC used when they cleared the way for transsexual athletes to compete in the Olympics this year. Learn more about the rights of transsexual athletes.
