A Frank Discussion of Gays in the Military
Wednesday August 25, 2004
Mary Ann Humphrey served nine years in the military before she was forced to resign for "homosexuality." Although she had a perfect record, none of that mattered because she chose to share her life with another woman. Feeling hopless and angry, Humphrey wrote My Country, My Right to Serve: Experiences of Gay Men and Women in the Military, World War II to the Present partly to educate, partly to agitate and partly to heal from the great injustice she had been dealt. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Humphrey and discuss the current situation for gays and lesbians in the military under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
