L Word Recap: Season 3, Episode 1
Our Lesbian Life movie reviewer Mary Foulk likes to write letters to producers. She was inspired to write this to Ilene Chaiken after watching the first episode of The L Word Season 3.Dear Ilene:
I must be honest. Overall, this episode sucked. I‘ve had such high hopes for this series. At long last, a glimpse into our lives, a chance for our stories to be told. Of course, you can’t tell everyone’s story. But the ones you do tell, please tell them honestly and responsibly. Tuning into the show, a viewer might think all lesbians are: a) incapable of monogamy and long term committed relationships—all of the characters have had affairs; b) overly dramatic freaks, think Alice, think Jenny, think Tonya; c) better off in the closet or better off “straight-acting”, like Carmen and now Shane; d) bad parents, who choose aesthetics over their baby’s well-being; and e) unable to live healthy, happy, aware lives and/or make healthy, happy, aware decisions.
Drama can come in the simplest of moments and the simplest of conflicts, the negotiation and navigation of the everyday. Have you seen Tales of the City? I highly recommend it, a visual, and storytelling masterpiece. You and your staff can do this, Ilene. I know you can convey us well. We do need you. There are myriad obstacles in our paths to freedom and equality. Including obstacles of our own creation. You’ve done a great job so far and we acknowledge the huge responsibility we have placed in your hands. Continue to clear the path, Ilene, continue to further the way.
Sincerely,
Mary Foulk
