No Gay Marriage in Washington
Wednesday July 26, 2006
The Washington State Supreme Court ruled today to uphold Washington's Defense of Marriage Act, making same-sex marriage illegal. In a 5-4 decision, Washington's highest court held that the state constitution does not require extending the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples.
Justice Barbara Madsen wrote that the state's marriage law was enacted to "promote procreation and to encourage stable families."
The ruling said same-sex couples failed to prove that they had a fundamental right to marry, or that the state's 1998 "Defense of Marriage Act" was unconstitutional. Massachusetts remains the only state in the US where gays and lesbians can marry. Here's more on the Washington State ruling.
