Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin

We really can't celebrate Gay & Lesbian History Month without including a feature about Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin. Del and Phyllis have been together since 1950. That's 56 years, for those of you who are bad at math. Del and Phyllis, with six other women, formed the first lesbian organization in the United States, Daughters of Bilitis in San Francisco in 1953. Together they wrote books about lesbians, organized for lesbian and women's rights and were the first gay or lesbian couple to get married in San Francisco in 2004.
