Straight & Married is the Minority
Tuesday October 17, 2006
Perhaps you've already seen this article. The New York Times has studied census statistics and for the first time straight married couples are in the minority. Only 49.7% of U.S. households are made up of married couples. What could this mean? Are more couples taking a stand, like Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron, and waiting until ALL couples can marry before they do? Or is marriage declining in popularity amongst straight people? Or could it be that straight people now think marriage has lost its meaning. I mean if they let gay people do it, how great can it be?
The study also looked at households with same-sex couples. Not surprising, the highest concentration of gay male couples is in San Francisco. Where are the lesbians? Northampton, Mass, also known as Lesbianville, U.S.A.

We had major issues with the Census Bureau in 2000. We simply refused to be counted as “living together”- we had a religious ceremony with clergy and relatives witnessing- we call it marriage! I can’t begin to tell you how many angry phone calls we got from census supervisors, visits on our doorstep, etc because we didn’t want to be counted as “shacking up” with kids. I still don’t how how or if they counted us at all.
