L Word 402: Alice Finds Papi

Monday January 15, 2007
Alice from The L WordSomeone told me they thought the fourth season of The L Word was suffering from lesbian bed death. Well, if that’s true, we found the cure. Hello Papi. Alice just loved Papi and those circles. Helena too, but with such a promiscuous woman, don’t you think Alice would have brought up safe sex? How dare The L Word ignore lesbian safe sex?

Speaking of Alice, she really does make this show, doesn’t she? She’s so smart and funny and sexy as hell. But that’s just my opinion. I’m sure many of you are glad to see Shane back to herself, trying to figure out what to do with her half brother. Thank God he came back unhurt. That was scary.

What is Max thinking? Dating the boss’s daughter? Pretty soon when they’re making out that child is going to reach for something that just ain’t gonna be there. How is Max going to handle that?

My favorite part of this episode is the whole Curve magazine slam of Jenny’s book. Of course lesbians are going to hate it. They hate Jenny. Except for me. I kind of like her, especially when she gets fired up. And is she fired up about that Curve writer, played by none other than out lesbian actress Heather Matarazzo.

Isn’t Bette just having a grand time at her new job? Her graduate student is coming on to her. (Nice arms!) And her boss is coming out to her. Bette, Bette, Bette, whatever you do, stay away from grad student. I see trouble written all over her young legs, I mean face.

I haven’t seen the episode yet (I’ll make sure to see it soon though; thanks youtube!) so I can’t comment in great depth, but I wanted to say something about the safe sex thing. They really have ignored that all together, I think. I mean, even Shane is pretty promiscuous–not as much as Papi, but still–and nothing about that from either her, or any one she sleeps with. Granted, they may not know how promiscous she is, but Carmen knew and there was still nothing. Just my $.02 for now.

I agree with the safe sex issue. At the same time, I don’t think that the L-word is the only series that doesn’t touch on that issue. In our society, we don’t like to bring up safe sex in any sort of coupling in our entertainment.
Also, why do lesbians hate Jenny? I love her! She is kind of wacky and a little bit crazy, but her character is studied more in depth than any other on the series.

One quick note, in the previous episode, the Max’s Boss mentions his daughter goes to Mount Holyoke. Mount Holyoke is an all girl school and has been described as lesbian central … so while the lack of dangly bits might throw her off, i doubt she would freak out too horibly. As for max … well, its not his fault he wasn’t born with a penis :( poor guy. I know how he feels.
