Barbara Gittings: Gay/Lesbian Rights Activist Dies

Tuesday February 20, 2007
Barbara Gittings, an early gay and lesbian rights activist died February 18th, 2007 at age 75 of breast cancer. Some people think of the Stonewall Rebellion as the start of the modern gay and lesbian rights movement. But the fact is, courageous gays and lesbians were fighting for our rights years before Stonewall. Barbara Gittings was once such lesbian pioneer. She picketed outside the White House, helped start one of the first lesbian organizations and worked to ensure you can find lesbian books in your library. My heart is with Kay Lahusen, her surviving partner. I highly recommend that everyone read about their exploits in Eric Marcus’ “Making History”. We stand tall because we stand on our ancestors’ shoulders, and these women prove that ancestors don’t have to be a matter of biology.

Though very few lesbian based books are at the local library…access to the internet is fondly monitored…
