L Word 407: Alice’s Big Helicopter Ride

Tuesday February 20, 2007
Phyllis is having a crisis. She hasn’t gotten over Alice yet and just can’t imagine life without her. Phyllis, there’s many a lesbian out here in the real world who can relate to you. If we had delicious Alice for just one night, I’m sure we’d have a hard time getting over her too. But Bette and Jodi --fresh from Bette’s bed-- rush over to comfort Phyllis. Your first love is always the hardest to get over, they insist. And Jodi insists she can’t love just one woman. Bette’s not pleased to hear this at all.

In the meantime, Tasha is having Iraq flashbacks and it’s the real deal. Somehow it hasn’t quite sunk in with Alice yet. Papi has to come around and tell her. This is her LIFE Alice. So, Alice decides to show Tasha she can take her life seriously by showing up at the Army base where she works. Are you serious Alice? Don’t you know you can get her kicked out of the army for even hinting that she’s a lesbian!? And then Alice insults Tasha’s crew, saying how cute and G.I. Jane they look. And to prove this is TV and not real life, Tasha invites Alice up for a helicopter ride. With her all lesbian crew. Yeah, right. Like she can just invite someone who hasn’t gone through a security clearance for a tourist ride around Los Angeles. But it does move the story forward. Tasha and Alice seem really smitten with each other now.

Helena the Whore

Helena has been called to pay off her bet and she’s fretting having to go and sleep with Catherine to do it. But she needn’t fear. Catherine wants to play more poker. Strip gin rummy. And it turns out Helena is pretty good at strip gin rummy. And after Catherine is naked, she has her way with her. So I guess she is a whore after all.

Max the man

Max is freaking out because he’s sure everyone knows he’s not a bio man and will make fun of him. Or he might lose his job. Luckily Alice calls on him to help with Our Chart. It’s a good excuse to get out of the office. Alice can’t quite figure out why the chart keeps crashing. Turns out, it’s been getting like 40,000 hits an hour. Wow, I wish this site saw that kind of traffic! Max informs Alice that she could be making bank on this site. She just needs to sell a little advertising. Max, of course, offers to help her get up to speed. What a nice guy. Max really needs to separate himself from these gals and find some friends that actually like him.

Shane and the Student Body

Shay is in trouble because he punched some kid out for calling him gay. Apparently his broken arm has healed enough to do some damage. Paige and Shane meet with the principal and Paige volunteers them to talk to the class about tolerance. Shay stands up and tells the whole class his sister is gay. Sweet. But sweeter than that, later, Shane and Paige finally kiss and we get to see how small Shane really is, making out with Kristanna Loken. Can’t wait to see where this one goes!

Tina and The Lez Girls

Even though Tina is so NOT Nina in Jenny’s story, Lez Girls, her boss wants her to try and get the movie rights. Tina reluctantly agrees. She doesn’t like the story. She meets with Jenny and suggests Jenny get a good agent so they can negotiate the deal. Well, Jenny does as suggested and the next thing we know, he’s started a bidding war for her movie. Will this leave Tina out in the cold? But the worst part is, Tina spills the beans to Kit about Angus’s affair.

It's just another day in Los Angeles on The L Word.

I have to agree about the Alice/ Tasha storyline. As an Army Brat and mother of a son, who’s in the Army, you do NOT just walk onto a military base. BTW, did ANYONE see the MP patch Tasha wore? If so, then when was she even on a helicopter, let alone seemingly running that operation? There is NO way a civilian would EVER ride in a helicopter unless they were with the media or some big wig polititian. That was soooooooo unrealistic. I WAS however glad to see them finally kiss. Alice’is so smart, I wonder why the writers sometimes give her these VERY dingy lines to say….Tina, wow, what a sell out. Sad sad sad. Jenny, can her ego get ANY BIGGER??!!!!! Does she REALLY think she’s the next Virginia Woolf?? Bette, what to do? Great sex, yes, but at what cost? She wants a relationship, MONOGOMOUS too!! Go Helena, what a scene, and someone once told her, “The house always wins”, yeah RIGHT! Max, well, we all see this one coming. Shane and Paige, hot hot hot. Although, as a mother of a 5th grader myself, they AINT stupid! If MY mom, and a gay “Friend”, wanted to talk with MY class, about tolerance ONLY after some other kids accused my mom of being gay, I think I’d have figured it out. At least Shay got it, and handled that awesome! I also LOVED the way Shane responded to the negative comments from that ONE obnoxious mom. The last scene, with her and Paige,OMG was that worth the wait!! I can’t wait to see the REST of what they’ve started!!! Again, is it Sunday already??!!!!!

oh jenny jenny jenny. i read an interesting note from ilene chaiken on the SHO website i think – that jenny is so complex and so flawed and perhaps more like ilene that she cared to admit..which means to me that jenny is with us for the long term, even if she doesn’t seem to evolve. is it true do you think that we all have the least insight into orselves than those around us? could this be ilene’s trouble in writing jenny’s character? her arc just never seems to resolve like the others.

tina tina tina – she needs to come back to her real planet.

hooray for paige and shane – finally shane sees some action! kate moennig is tall but what a skinny thing. of course, kristanna loken is like amazon woman. does anyone know – is she locked in for the whole season or as a new longer-term cast member?

Trace, Kristanna Loken is NOT coming back next season. I read on USA Today’s Pop Culture, that she complained that the egos were too high on the set and too many other women. I never realized her career was so amazing, that she could afford to walk away from the L Word, a cutting edge and career boosting show? Hmmmmm…..

Chris – thanks for the info. as i’m sure you know, ensemble shows, especially those with a lot of women characters, often garner reports that the ego level (or bitch factor) is too high for ‘normal’ people to work in. i suspect this was true on the sets of queer as folk among all those guys too – but no one ever reported on that much -though i did hear about it from time to time. anyway – she was never ‘announced’ as a new character in the S4 promos – like phyllis, jodi, pappi and tasha – she is just a transition story for shane i guess
