L Word 409: Marina’s Magic Dance
So, it’s the return of Marina again. She’s performing with her dance troupe. It’s like synchronized swimming without the water. Very strange. And what does this have to do with any of the story lines? Well, it turns out Jenny is on the search for a producer for her movie adaptation of “Lez Girls.” Jenny originally thought a musical would be fun. Really, a musical? Jeezus Jenny, what a way to ruin a potentially great film. But as I said last week, Jenny is a wacknut, so of course she would think “musical.”
Anyway, after visiting many directors who piss her off in one way or another--she is Jenny after all--Jenny finally meets the director who wants to do a musical. And who is there to give us a tease of what it might look like? That’s right! Marina and her synchronized dance team. How’s that for full circle?
Angus is trying to win Kit back, but she’s not having it. She seems content to lapse back into alcoholism. How soon until Bette pulls her head out of Jodi’s crotch and ships her off to rehab? But Kit did have one grand moment of clarity. She told Papi to drop the whole “player” act with the ridiculous hat and attitude and just be real. The cheers went up in my living room.
Bette and Jodi are still trying to work things out. Can Bette handle Jodi dating other people? Will Jodi be willing to give up other people to stay with Bette? Stay tuned…
Alice and Tasha are still in bed, but coming up for air when Helena gets home from her weekend of gambling with Catherine. They invite her into the bed to hang out and talk. Then Papi calls outside the window, she needs to be around friends because she’s sprung for a girl. (Straight girl Kit, but the girls don’t know this yet.) So, they’re all hanging out in Alice’s bed having a grand old time when the doorbell rings again. This time it’s Leonard, Phyllis’ husband. In a moment of temporary insanity, Alice invites him in. So now there’s four lesbians and Leonard in Alice’s bed. In one of the hilarious scenes The L Word is known for, the gals give Leonard a quick schooling in sexual orientation, coming out later in life and why lesbian sex is so life changing. Finally Phyllis comes to claim Leonard. Great comedy!
But of course, there’s pathos too. Shane’s dad has returned to claim Shay and take him back to Oregon. Which, of course, breaks Shane’s heart. There’s really nothing anyone can do for her, but Alice comes to the rescue and they find a great way to blow off some steam.
And speaking of family, Max gets the call that his mother has died. He wants to go for her funeral, but his sister told him not to come. No one knows of his transition except her. Going: a good idea. Inviting the new intern you have the hots for: not so much. We’ll see how it all plays out in the next episode.
Overall, a good episode, but certainly lacking in sex. What were your thoughts? Add them below.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that maxes intern is transitioning also? Good episode but DEF lacking sex!
Well, even L Word needs to come up for breath too & lay down some ground work for episodes & seasons to come. That is what keeps us tuned in~well, the sex scenes do too, but that’s beside the point!
I liked the Alice bed plot. Made for good comedy, yes, but also showed how the girls came together from different perspectives to help the poor guy out.
My heart broke & the tears rolled when Shay left. You could just feel the hurt in Shane’s eyes! OMG! Can’t talk….getting choked up…..
we were all wondering when marina became a dancer? i’ve been watching with the same group of friends since the l word has been on tv, and none of us could figure out where that came from.
cheers in our living room, though, too, when kit told papi to cut the annoying act.
You folks wonder why the straight world looks at us as sex fiends and freaks? Our world is about love not sex. When you get that through your head, probably after you mature, then you will know. We want to love our partners and make lives with them, not just have sex. But of course, that’s how it is when you are young. I remember.
I HATED SHAY LEAVING SHANE! It competely broke my heart! I also think that Jenny is starting to get a bit annoying! The book is totally going to her head!
I love the L Word however, it’s like every other soap opera, everyone is wealthy, beautiful, and troubled, but always having the greatest sex ever. (Sigh) it’s a lovly fantasy.
Many moons ago when Marina’s g’f/wife came into the picture, putting Jenny out, wasn’t it mentioned that she was traveling w/a dance troupe as their costume designer? I remember the beginning sequence of Marina’s partner hemming a dress & moving her hand up the skirt.
As for the sex/love issue-don’t forget, lesbians (at least the ones I know), tend to fall IN LOVE very quickly, so the sex while being an intrical part of the story, is also part of real life. Not saying just b/c it’s raunchy & fabulous, doesn’t mean it doesn’t mean anything. However, I would hate this forum to be a grounds to discuss personal issues & not those of L Word. We can save that for the discussion groups section of About Lesbian Life.
I thought it was a pretty good episode. Sex isn’t everything, aye?
Watching Marina do anything is well worth it! I’m still waiting for the episode when Jenny gets admitted to a mental hospital. Does TIVO edit out Jenny scenes? She’s such a boring retard!
I hope Shane gets to take her brother back and that Alice is doing okay, Bette. Kit WILL be okay IF she gets together with Papi. Whatever happened to Kit’s ex, the Elvis-impersonator? I like Kelly Lynch.
