Is Iowa Next for Gay Marriage?
Friday August 31, 2007
An Iowa court ruled on Thursday that it is unconstitutional to deny gays and lesbians the right to marry in that state. The ruling came after six same-sex couples sued for the right to marry in 2005. The judge who wrote the decision said not allowing gays and lesbians to marry "constitutes the most intrusive means by the state to regulate marriage. This statute is an absolute prohibition on the ability of gay and lesbian individuals to marry a person of their choosing." Since this decision is by a district court, the case will likely move to the Iowa Supreme Court who will ultimately decide on the legality of gay marriage in Iowa.
