Tips for LGBT Teens heading back to School

Monday September 3, 2007
It's time for students and teachers to head back to the classroom. For me going back to school was always an exciting time. I had some new clothes, a bunch of new classes and teachers to look forward to and the opportunity for a fresh start. For GLBT students, heading back to school can be a mixed bag. There's the excitement and anticipation, but also the fear of rejection. What if people don't accept me for who I am? One of the best ways to ensure a good school experience is to have some friends you can count on. They don't have to be gay, but they do have to be gay-accepting. Here's how to meet other GLBT teens.

The start of a new school years means the possibility of new friends. You might hit it off with someone in your chemistry class or make a new best friend on the track team. As you get closer to your new friend, you probably want to come out to her and tell her you're lesbian or bisexual. But how do you even start that conversation? Here are some tips for talking with your friends about being lesbian or bisexual.

What if you have homophobic classmates? Don't let a homophobic classmate get away with bullying you.

A great way to make connections with other lesbian, gay and bisexual teens is through a school gay/straight alliance (GSA). If your school doesn't have a gay/straight alliance, why not start your own GSA?
