I'm finding a bit of irony in Ellen's latest woes with the media. Seems Ellen and Portia adopted a dog from a rescue organization. Ellen paid to have to dog neutered and trained, but it didn't get along with her cats. So, Ellen did what any of us would do, she found another home for the dog. One with two young girls in the house. Well, it turns out, Ellen signed a contract when she got the puppy and giving the dog away was not okay. So the rescue organization threatened to "out" Ellen to the media, swooped in and took the dog back from the tearful preteen girls. What will happen to the puppy is not yet known.
I do find it ironic, though that Ellen's biggest media controversy is over a puppy. Do you remember the code name of her "Coming Out Episode" ten years ago? That's right. The Puppy Episode. What is it with Ellen and puppies and the media?
What are your thoughts on this whole debacle? Is Ellen to blame? After all, she did sign a contract. Or is the puppy rescue organization the real villain here? Taking a needy puppy from a good home? Add your comments below.
Take a step back in time and revisit Ellen's coming out and the first Puppy Episode.

Excuse me but I think the rescue organization is motivated more by Ellens deep pockets and the free publicity, then any real concern for the puppy.
It seems the rescue organization is creating a controversy where there needn’t be one. Unless there is a good reason why the recipients of the puppy couldn’t provide a good home (which I highly doubt), the organization would be acting in the best interests of the puppy to simply screen the new family and fill out new paperwork to allow that family to adopt the animal.
The group’s threat to “out Ellen to the media” demonstrates that they are using her star status to generate press and set an example to anyone who might not think to take their rules seriously.
Most rescue organizations work very hard to find homes for the pets they save. Getting the word out about animals available for adoption is one major obstacle to success, as many rescue groups have very limited budgets. Rather than generate press over a conflict, it would be great if this group would ask Ellen to assist them in getting the word out about the many rescued pets waiting so hopefully for loving homes.
Maybe there is another side to the story I haven’t heard yet. However, with so many homeless pets waiting for loving homes, it seems counterproductive to tear a pet away from those willing and able to provide a happy home.
I understand the she did sign a contract, however, shee took it upon herself to place the puppy into a good home. How many animals a just dumped off every year? I applaud Ellen for finding a good home for the pup!I Agree that it is probably a ploy by the adoption agency to extract money and publicity…What a shame! Ellen acted responibly in finding a good home for the pup. It should have been left at that.
it’s a dog, not a human child. the animal shelter is acting like they are DSS for dogs. Come on. Seems like the shelter would just let the new family have the dog, and do a home study on the new family so all their i’s are doted and their t’s are crossed. Who cares if Ellen signed a contract. Everyone knows contracts don’t guarantee anything now a days. You can always challenge them in court. Its a dog contract, not even a cell phone or leasing contract. The whole thing is stupid. Anyone who takes an 11yr old kid’s dog away is in the wrong. Why would you take a perfectly safe dog out of a perfectly safe home and put it back into a shelter…to euthanize it?! I hope the kids get their dog back soon and that shelter learns an important lesson…don’t fuck with Ellen or anyone else with a tv show!
well it’s not like she gave it to michael vick. i am sure it was not intentional to break the rules.sounds like a ploy to exert some power by the adoption group.. aren/t they getting what they want out of this deal…. so what if the new family kid is not 14…
wasn’t michael vick over 21?….
Why don’t they drop it and move on she made a honest mistake. LEAVE HER ALONE!
She a human being and as a human she’s entitled to make her share of boo boos.
I understand that some people put animals on the same level as humans but they are not. I obviously don;t believe in animal cruelty but to see Ellen on tv crying about a dog – a dog that she gave away , personally I find it a little weird and a little obnoxious to waste air time on it. Does she have a therapist ?? I saw the snippet of the episode on the news and the intro with her crying I thought someone died or something. I don;t know who is weirder her or Rosie. Can we get a normal lesbian on day time TV.
Tracy, you are heartless. Dogs do become part of people’s families, and caring people, obviously a lot more caring than you, do actually let animals into their hearts.
I think it’s you that needs therapy.
My heart goes out to Ellen. While I can see both sides, I think she did the RESPONSIBLE thing by placing the dog in a loving home – people she knew. All the woman at teh rescue had to do was go to the home of the new family and check it out…dog’s happy, family is happy, end of story. After listening to her comments on the news last night, I am convinced she is just pissed that she got called out on her heartless bahavior and is now going to be vindictive…because she can. Everyone makes mistakes…
Common lady, lick your wounds (so to speak) give the puppy back and get on with it. The longer you drag this out and the more you trash an individual that has a long history of being an animal advocate, the more you damage your own reputation.
The puppy’s ALREADY been given away to another family.
The contract that Ellen signed stated that the animals from the rescue organization could NOT go to homes with children under the age of 14. It also states that if the adopting “parent” finds that, for whatever reason she cannot keep the rescued animal, it was to go back to the rescue organization.
Ellen admits to not really reading the contract.
Can I ask a stupid question here? Why couldn’t Ellen simply have gotten another dog for her hairdresser’s kids? Yes, I know they had bonded with the rescue pup, but the fact is, Ellen made a mistake. Surely these girls are old enough to understand that(6 and 12, I believe) and to fall in love with another pup??
I think both sides have blown this out of proportion.
According to the news the owner of the ‘rescue’ group is the REAL bitch here! Owner Marina Baktis drove by Sharon Sandoval’s house, didn’t like her yard or the fact Sharon was walking her adopted dog without a leash and took HER dog back for 6 days putting Sharon in turmoil, too! So this is a pattern for Mutts & Moms so they should be closed down and a normal shelter without her stupid rules put in that area! Sharon said Marina’s heart was in the right place, but that she’s “off the deep end” in regards to being her own dictator!
Ellen’s problem should hi-light a very bad deal anybody gets by going to this woman’s ‘rescue’ operations!
I have six huge dogs and most were strays but 3 were given to me by people who could no longer keep them. The one guy paid for his dog’s shots & neutering and he knows he can always come by to visit his dog (he has 9 other dogs who didn’t get along with this one), and the other 2 were given to me by a friend who was moving and allergic so she is glad I have them and I send her pictures all the time.
RESCUE means to help save someone and these dogs were truly rescued by this Marina bitch from Moms & Mutts needs to get over her hatred of celebrities (look where she lives!) and NOT be a hostile shithead! Before she whined about death threats I was thinking about sending her a box of my dog shit here…
Ellen is a saint and did the right thing! Portia signed the papers, she said, so Ellen should be blameless in this hysteria. And the news said Marina already took Iggy to someone else claiming she was NOT giving the dog back to Ellen or her hairdresser.
Ellen just did the normal thing we all would’ve done. I wanted to just give her a big hug, poor baby.
Also when I adopted the strays left off at Rt 247 around here, I fixed them first and then let go them since they had no tags and if they lived around here. I put new leather collars on each with my ph# on it in case the real owners would call me and 1 did, saying her fence was only 4′ so that I might as well keep it (she had 6 others), and I would fix each dog before taking to the local kennel since that ensures they might not get euthenized.
Ellen is such a loving woman and so caring and she IS so real to everyone she meets (I spoke with NBC reporter Mary Parks about her since she’s met Ellen alot at the station) so crying on her show was unorthodox but was REAL.
I love Ellen & Portia and hope her hairdresser just goes to the pound for strays there.
On the NBC news, they interviewed another victim of Moms & Mutts, Sharon Sandoval who had her adopted dog taken by Marina Baktis for 6 days just because Marina drove by and didn’t approve of something? Marina needs psych treatmenmt on her meglamania! And her ‘rescue’ biz should be shut down! I only go to pounds and shelters for my pets. But out here they run free every spring when heartless people dump them off. Also Portia signed the ‘agreement’ and its true, Ellen did NOT give the puppy to Mike Vick! So much nonsence & shit by this rude Marina…if cops came to MY door? There’d be a militia fight!
I must admit it did seem strange to see Ellen crying on TV about this. The girls will get over it and find another puppy. I think this hurts Ellen in the public eye. I think it’s not the girls Ellen is worried about.
Didn’t Ellen have another puppy in the past that didnt get on with her cats and Portia? Wasn’t she named Lucy by viewer votes? maybe I am wrong, but if that is the case maybe she should not adopt anymore puppies to prevent this happening again.
We have all signed contracts and been caught because we never read them properly.
It does seem this has been blown out of proportion, lets hope everyone refocuses and concentrates on the well- being of a puppy that needs a loving home.
It’s ridiculous to sign a contract agreeing to not get rid of the dog when you can’t care for it properly! Would that organization prefer the dog stay in a home where it could become the victim of neglect?
she found the puppy a home for crying out loud..what is the issue here??!!
Contracts are made to be broken or at least re-negotiated if necessary, which seems to be the case here. These are some pretty serious control issues on the part of Mutts & Moms owners. The update is that the owner in question actually violated her own contract by deliberately not including either Portia or Ellen’s names imbedded in the micro chip…hers was the only name on it – clearly a violation of her own contract/ownership rules. Very Interesting Indeed!
Blessings To Everyone Involved
LOL, I had no idea her coming out episode was the Puppy Episode. LOL
That IS ironic!
Umm — I didn’t see the crying but did hear it was a wee bit over the top. But whatev, if that’s how she felt, that’s how she felt.
The rescue folks are obviously on a power trip and unfortunately, it’s the animals and people who love them that are suffering here.
It’s a shame.
But I agree — Ellen should just get the girls another puppy. They’ll love him/her too.
If I were to be looking for a puppy I definitely would not turn to the agency that Ellen went through!!!!!!! They are heartless, rude and uncaring! They should have appreciated the fact that after all the money Ellen put into that puppy that she found the puppy a good home and the agency should have just filled out the paperwork for the puppy to stay with that little girl!!!!!!!
hi there i do not know ellen very well but i know what she is telling, ive been with my dog.there is nothing to read between the lines ellen cried because she trully cares for living creatures such as that lillte puppy,go ellen i believe your tears are for real and if they say you cried because there is something else well who knows..time will tell..ellen is a emotional person..
“Excuse me but I think the rescue organization is motivated more by Ellens deep pockets…”
How are they making money on this? You’re just saying some cliche phrase for emotional effect.
I think these contracts are pretty ridiculous. Think of any other property you buy. Do you have to return it to the seller if you later want to get rid of it?
That being said, what she did was illegal, although not immoral, and while the agency does have a right to enforce the contract, they should now turn around and adopt the dog (with all the normal policies – fees, background check, etc.) to the family they took it from. That should make everyone happy.
From what I’ve read, the agency itself, isn’t entirely faultless. The two women have a tendency to not follow their company’s own rules. I know that Ellen and Portia have Iggy’s best interests at heart and I also feel the one woman is getting back at Ellen…for whatever reason. I’d hire a private investigator to look into the policies of this agency to find out just how up front they are and if they did things by the book. If not, they created a mountain out of a molehill and did Ellen a great injustice.
Ellen is a human being…guess you weren’t aware of that…and humans do cry, yes…even on television. To question her motives in adopting this puppy, shows how little you really know her…as a person.
She’s one of the least disingenuous people in showbiz.
Shez , just the fact that you would call me heartless because i made a comment over a dog proves how delusional you and some others are. Newsflash – just because a fellow lesbian does something that does not mean you have to foolishly and blindly support it. Use your brains. Ellen the woman from New Orleans who did not shed a tear or even act remotely interested when she spent a little time talking about katrina, on tv crying because a couple of junior high schoolers (age 11 and 12) had a dog for two weeks had to give it up because they never officially applied for adoption. are you guys serious ?? Ellen adopted a dog went through the adoption process and because the dog did not fit into her family she gave it away to her her hairdresser. Now call me crazy but somehow i don;t think thats was right. and i find her behavior irresponsible. then she goes on tv and tries to strong arm the group into giving the dog back to the family. I’m glad the group stood its ground and did what they they was right . the fact that they called ellen to ask how the dog was doing shows they are serious – Hey Ellen we are calling to see how the dog is doing – oh the dog – i gave it away -he was too active for our household and the other animals didn;t like him. For the mother of the two girls, who by the way did not go down to fill out an application for adoption when she was told she could, – This can be an opportunity to teach your daughters about the world they are not exactly babies – by the time i was 11 or 12 I think certain things were starting to be understandable . 1) you can;t have everything your way and 2) there are rules in this world.
Hey, gals -
I’ve always thought Ellen was fantastic and a great role model for the lesbian community. And, I still do.
But I keep hearing rumors that Ellen has owned puppies a few times before and then given them up. Does anyone know if this is true?? (IF it is, then let’s get onside here: those people (lesbians or otherwise) simply should not be given another puppy.)
I guess there is not much other news going on if this is such a big deal. I have been involved in pet adoptions before. The procedure can be quite arduous, just as in adopting a child – another process in which I have been involved. It is standard procedure for the agency (whether for children or pets) to evaluate the home, environment, and people involved to determine if the household is a good place for the pet. In the case of pets it is clearly stated in the signed contract that if for some reason the adoption does not work out, the pet is supposed to go back to the agency for re-placement. No malice is meant. It is just that after all that work to find one forever home, they want to make sure that the animal is well-place somewhere. Ellen just borke the rules. Big deal. Like they did, the agency can come take the dog and place it somewhere else. Personalities and whether the new famile had children under 14 YO have no place here. It was clear that the dog was to go back whence it came for its good sake. If all the whiners just got off their horses (lesbian bashing, animal hating, mean spirited agencies, etc), and realized that a mistake had been made (Ellen’s breaking the contract and not returning the dog to the proper place which perhaps could have been handled better by the adopting agency), and that everyone was just trying to do right by the animal, this would be much less of an issue. But that scenario does not a good news story make, n’est-ce pas??
