Will California Recognize my Canada Marriage?

Tuesday May 20, 2008
The questions keep pouring in about California's recent gay marriage ruling. Here's one from Barbara in Roanoke, VA:
My partner and I were married in Canada earlier this year, where gay marriage is permitted. Are there any guidelines for reciprocity from Canada to California?
The short answer is yes. California will recognize your marriage, but because Virginia is one of the states with a constitutional ban on gay marriage your marriage will not be recognized in your home state of Virginia.

I’m Barbara’s partner. Thanks for the quick response Kathy! Yes, it is unfortunate that it won’t be recognized in VA our home, but we are considering moving to a state where it will be. Thanks for checking into that for us.

Massachusetts is way closer to Virginia than California is. My wife and I got married in 2004 when it became legal here. We have never had any problems (except tax time!) being a married couple here.
