Sarah Palin on GLBT Issues
Friday August 29, 2008
John McCain has made his choice and it's one that has surprised both liberals and conservatives. McCain picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Palin hasn't been in politics very long and there is still a lot to be learned about her and her stance on issues of importance to the lesbian and gay community. Here is what we know so far about Sarah Palin and GLBT issues.

Why is Sarah Palin’s support of Alaska’s Defense of Marriage act any different than Biden’s support of the Federal Defense of Marriage act? Obama doesn’t believe in marriage between gays either. If we are going to criticize one for this view, can we at least be fair and criticize them all?
How pathetic that the first woman to even have a chance at the White House is a hopeless conservative with such narrow and harmful views. This nation deserves better.
Sarah Palin scares me. Gun toting, anti pro choice. Obama said it well, and I quote, “We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don’t tell me we can’t uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.”, unquote. Her beliefs suggest to me, another neo-con attempt at ripping the Constitution apart. Vote Obama/Biden.
Faith, I’m sorry, but you can’t put Obama & Palin in the same bucket. He is at least in favor of full domestic partnership status for gays & lesbians, with all of the rights and responsibilities of marriage. Palin doesn’t even think we deserve health care through our partner’s work.
If you compare the two presidential candidates and their official party platform, you just can’t possibly think it’s not a world apart.
Every time I get annoyed by the right wing, I donate a bit to Obama. Sometimes it’s $50, sometimes it’s only $5. I figure I would buy Obama a coffee if it would help the campaign that supports my rights as much as is politically possible, so I donate a bit here and there and it’s less painful that way.

Commenting on Faith’s comment…You can’t possibly put Obama & Palin in the same league in terms of their stance on lgbt people. Obama actively includes us and is strongly in favor of getting as much equality as is possible. I don’t know whether he thinks marriage really should be just a man and a woman or not, but I can’t imagine that being a tenable position yet. But almost full equality as domestic partners sounds pretty good, from where I’m looking. Scores of 9 and 0 are still less than 10, but you can’t say they they’re comparable, just because they’re both less than perfect. (I made the numbers up, but I imagine HRC would grade them similarly).
I donate $ to Obama’s campaign every time the Republicans annoy me. Which is a lot, lately. Here’s the campaign donation page. I wish Hillary would have won, but she didn’t, so we’ve got to move forward and support the next best candidate. At least, for once, we get to vote FOR someone, not just picking the “lesser of two evils”.
Don’t forget to VOTE!
Oops, I didn’t think the first one went through. Ignore that second comment!
