Same-Sex Marriage Now Legal in Connecticut

Friday October 10, 2008
The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled today in favor of same-sex marriage. The court ruled that civil unions are not the same as marriage and that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same right to be married as heterosexual couples under Connecticut's constitution.

Connecticut is the third state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage. Massachusetts and California also allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote in the court's ruling:

We conclude that, in light of the history of pernicious discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians, and because the institution of marriage carries with it a status and significance that the newly created classification of civil unions does not embody, the segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognizable harm.

Connecticut began offering civil unions to same-sex couples in 2005. This court case was a challenge to those civil unions by eight gay and lesbian couples who contend that civil unions are different and not equal to marriage. The court agreed. Read the NY Times coverage of the story.
