Bulletproof Faith: An Interview with Candace Chellew-Hodge
Friday December 5, 2008
Being Christian and GLBT can be tough. On the one side, you have many members of your faith telling you that you're an abomination, a sinner or that God hates you. On the other side, you have fellow gays and lesbians questioning why you would want to be a member of a group that condemns you. Candace Chellew-Hodge understands. She has been there. Raised in a fundamentalist Christian church, she walked away from religion when she decided she wanted to live her life fully as a lesbian. But something was missing. Her relationship with God. Eventually she returned to a gay-friendly church and found everything she was looking for. She is now a pastor and has written a survival manual for gay and lesbian Christians. Candace Chellew-Hodge explains what it means to be Bulletproof.

Kathy,
I couldn’t thank you more for this article. I as I’m sure many have grew up in a christian home and for many years that was the core of my life. When I came out to my friends I was pushed away and had to make new friendships, because of how they reacted I kept it a secret from my family for a year. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. When I finally told them they were all very surprised and had many questions but they love me and they have now come to terms with it. I haven’t returned to the church however. This is something that is troubling to me and has weighed heavily on my mind. My girlfriend of 2 years believes in God but has no interest in attending a church. I’m wondering if there is a way for me to locate a gay friendly church in the area, maybe that would open up her mind a little bit and help me deal with some issues I’ve been struggling with. Thank you again for this article!!!!!
