Vermont, the first state to legalize civil unions, could be the next state with same-sex marriage. Yesterday the Vermont Senate voted overwhelmingly to legalize same-sex marriage. The bill now moves to the Vermont House, where it is expected to pass. Where it could be held up, however, is at the Governor's desk. Republican Governor Jim Douglas says he supports Vermont's civil union law, but thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman. If the Governor does veto the bill, it is not certain whether the Vermont legislature would over-ride the veto.
Currently, only Massachusetts and Connecticut allow same-sex marriage in the US. Quite a few other countries have legalized gay marriage.
