Much like New York State, gay and lesbian couples who are married in a place where same-sex marriage is legal will have their marriage recognized in Washington, DC beginning today.
So, if you were married in one of the states or countries that recognizes same-sex marriage, here is what you need to know about the new rights granted to you today in Washington, DC.
Of course, because of the Defense of Marriage Law, no federal benefits will be available to married same-sex couples.

What a strange world we live in. Here in
Australia, same-gender marriages are still a no go but under our common-law partner laws, a same gender partner has all the rights and benefits as any defacto partner. Yet there in the USA,while same gender marriage is being acepted in more and more states, rights and benefits are being denied. It’s like the Powers That Be seem to think that if they withhold some things it will keep us under control. Heaven forbid that the world [and by the world I mean coming generations] should think of us as NORMAL people.
