Yesterday the District of Columbia's City Council voted to legalize gay marriage. That means couples could begin getting married in D.C. as early as March. Congress, which has authority over laws passed in D.C. and the mayor still have to sign the bill, but it is expected that they will.
Earlier this year, the District of Columbia voted to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. Now gay and lesbian couples can also get married there.
Washington, D.C. joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire in legalizing same-sex marriage in the United States.

Can I say, YES!!!
Wow, that’s great.
WOW that’s awesome news, quite wonderful really….hope the Caribbean could follow suit…I live in the Caribbean, and we are literally nowhere near this….so I applaud D.C in following suit….another great achievement. I have 2 friends leaving tomorrow to get married in Canada….
Wow, that is great. I live 3hrs from DC so I will be heading there to marry my lover of 4yrs. Hope one day VA will consider that.
My partner and I live in Seattle where Ref. 71 just passed…the “Everything but marriage” bill. While it’s GREAT that it passed and we are now (literally) card carrying lesbians in Washington, we will take a trip to D.C. to be called “married” somewhere….even if it’s not in our home state. Yay, D.C.!!
I too am from the Caribbean, living in Canada now, but its amazing that our brothers n sisters in D.C. can now exercise and enjoy their right to marriage. This is truly an amazing moment. Hopefully my country will follow suit, although I doubt it will be anytime in the near future. Good job D.C.
