Gay Marriage Now Legal in Argentina

It's a very Catholic country, yet it has one of the biggest gay pride celebrations in the world. Today Argentina became the latest country, and the first in Latin American to legalize same-sex marriage.

Gay and lesbian couples in Argentina will have all the legal rights and responsibilities of marriage, including the right to adopt children and inherit property. A big wedding rush is expected in the capital of Buenos Aires, but because of residency requirements, it is not expected that Argentina will become a gay wedding destination.

The law passed the Senate 33-27, despite a large opposition from members of the Catholic Church. Argentine President Cristina Fernandez is a big  supporter of gay rights and backed the gay marriage bill. The rest of the country is not so supportive, however.

Same-sex marriage is also legal in Mexico City and according to Yahoo News, the tourism bureau offered a free honeymoon to the first same-sex couple to wed in Argentina.

It is hoped that Argentina’s landmark decision will set events in motion for gay rights throughout the rest of Latin America. Don’t you think?
