The Kids are All Right

By , About.com Guide   July 19, 2010

Follow me on:

A mainstream lesbian movie? One that involves family values and a couple that actually has on-screen chemistry? I say, "It's about time." Stephanie Schroeder, Lesbian Life movie reviewer says, "This film is fun and sexy, but also smart and very real. Get thee to The Kids Are All Right while it's still in theaters."

Have you see this film? Are you a parent who used a sperm donor? What do you think?

Yet another lesbian movie that revolves around a man(men). Makes me want to puke. I was very disappointed in this movie. It had so much potential to be a sweet story of a gay family, period. Like we need any more help being taken less seriously by straight people as monogomous couples and that all lesbians really need is a good romp with a guy. Give me a break!

I agree with M. In fact, I’ll add that I think the director has penis envy. The scene where Jules reacts to seeing Paul’s penis for the first time is ridiculous!

this movie was very dissapointing for many reasons:
1. does anyone know lesbians who watch gay male porn to get off. i don’t
2. depicted heterosexual sex as hot, portrayed lesbian sex
as boring. i thought it was interesting how graphic the sex scenes of heterosexuals, and even gay men were, while we got to see a head above the covers
3. does the guy always have to be a flake?
4. this family didn’t seem to have any friends

Interesting how most of the lesbian critics praise this movie but the average lesbian hates the movie. Is this because it’s made by a lesbian director? What would be the reaction if it had been made by a man? Are there financial incentives being offered to lesbian critics who recommend the movie? Many people think so. I saw it and I am ashamed that this was made by a lesbian. Yes the acting is very good, the movie had a lot of potential but apparently it is impossible to make a movie where a lesbian doesn’t want some dick. How is this helping our community? I’m baffled.

I’m hetero and I agree with the comment no. 5. The film makes a mockery of a lesbian who secretely lusts for a gorgeous, sexy man. What if the sperm donor was aging, older, fat. Would the encounter have happened? It’s ridiculous, especially when Julianna Moore, who we are supposed to believe wants to have sex with the donor out of frustration, delights in the size of the guy’s penis. Although, I liked the acting, especially that of the children, I felt the movie was too contrived. I don’t care if the director is a lesbian or not, while she was trying to expose this couple’s overly p-c attitudes, the movie itself was rapped up in making sure we all know that this upper middle class family is okay in spite of being unconventional. The director needed to dig deeper. I think she was more interested in selling a movie than making a thought provoking film.

This movie is extremely lesbian-unfriendly in my opinion. I hope it doesn’t get straight people thinking that we would have sex with men, and even worse, like it, UGH! >:(
What we need is a real lesbian/gay/LGBT movie showing at mainstream theaters…
