What a night! Maine, Washington and Maryland voters have all voted to approve same-sex marriage in their states. This is the first time that gay marriage has won at the polls by a popular vote. Also for the first time, voters rejected a ban on same-sex marriage in Minnesota.
Clearly this is a sign that American opinions on gay marriage are changing and changing rapidly. It was only four years ago that voters in California approved Prop 8. And eight years ago in 2004, eleven states all voted to ban same-sex marriage. Perhaps President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage earlier this year helped. Perhaps all the protests following the passage of Prop 8 helped. Perhaps all of you, taking to social media and talking one on one with families and loved ones helped. Perhaps TV shows like Glee, Modern Family and The New Normal and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres being so out helped. Whatever the reason, let's celebrate our victories today.
