Intersex is the term used to describe someone who is born with primary or secondary sex characteristics that defy the medical definitions of male and female. When children are born, the doctor usually proclaims, "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!" but with children who are born intersex, it isn't that simple. There are different reasons some people are born intersex and those who advocate for intersex rights contend that it's just a natural variation, like eye color skin color and that doctors should not perform unnecessary medical interventions on intersex children so that they appear to be more "normal." Today, we learn a bit more about what it means to be intersex and what the LGBT community can do to be an ally to intersex people.
