I got up at 5:30 this morning. But it was for a good cause. I wanted to be on hand to witness the first same-sex marriage licenses being issued in Vancouver, Washington, just across the river from Portland. When I arrived around 7am, there were about 15 couples in line, most of them lesbian couples. The first couple got there about midnight the night before and had been waiting all night to be the first in line to get their marriage license. Jessica and Ashley are two sweet young women who've been through a lot in their one and a half years together, including a health crisis where one of them was kept from her partner's side until she produced documents proving they were domestic partners. Rights like hospital visitation are one of reasons gay and lesbian couples so want marriage equality. But this day, for Ashley and Jessica was clearly because they were in love with one another and wanted to make a commitment to share their lives together. This is their story.
