The Bottom Line

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters takes us back to England in the Victorian era. But this is not the Victorian novel of your mother's time! Full of lesbian lust, thievery, deceit and greed, in Fingersmith you're not even sure who the good guys and bad guys are.

Guide Review - Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

Sarah Waters, author of the award-winning Tipping the Velvet, once again takes us back in time. Susan was raised in a house of thieves in a poor part of London in the 1800s. She agrees to go to the country become a maid to a rich lady and attempt to swindle her out of her fortune. But what awaits her, she could never imagine.

The narration of this story switches back and forth between Susan and Lady Maud. Just when you think you know what's going on and where the story is leading, the narrator changes and you're shown a whole other level of conniving and deceit.

Fingersmith is a page-turner that will keep you up late wondering where this tale will take you.
