Word Queer Called Offensive

New York State claims 'queer' indecent

By , About.com Guide

The state of New York has banned a non-profit agency from using the word queer in its title. According to 356gay.com an agency that tried to register with the name Queer Awareness was told that it could not use the name 'queer' in it's title.

New York State claims the name is in violation of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, which bans language deemed to be obscene. A New York City man was attempting to register a non-profit to promote "healthy image of nonheterosexual people through tasteful advertisements and other media in order to ameliorate prejudice."

Christopher Barton Benecke, who was attempting to register the name, said that the word 'queer' was more appropriate than gay or lesbian because his group will serve bisexuals and transgendered too. "Queer is all-encompassing. I use it to identify myself," he says. "I don't find it offensive at all."
