Hollie’s Coming Out Story
A Bisexual Comes Out

By , About.com Guide

I remember being about 14 years old when I first told my Mom that I was bisexual. I was too scared to tell her face to face so I slipped her a note before I went to bed one night. She asked me what made me think that way. I lamely told her "I don't know". Thinking back on it now- I identified that way because I'd had boyfriends but never a girl.

How could I know? In high school I had random encounters with another girl. We kissed occasionally and flirted endlessly. We took freshman year gym together and she always told me how good I looked or how cute she thought I was. She would write to me with passionate intention. After more than a few disappointments, and graduating high school- I let her go and my parents still thought I was a nice hetero girl that would marry a nice boy and have children.

I Dated Boys -- Then I met Her

I dated a guy for almost two and a half years. I had all the intention in the world of being his wife and starting a family with him. That is until I met Her. We began to hang out together outside of work and talk a lot while we were on the job.

I Come Out in Stages

I went through weeks of torturous decision making. Do I take a chance on something desirable? Or do I stay with what's comfortable? I ended up having to come out in stages. I had to first admit that this is what I wanted. Second, I needed to fill Her in that she's what I wanted. And lastly I had to share with my parents all over again.

I told my mom that my boyfriend and I had broken up and that there was little chance of reconcile. She asked what had happened? We were doing so well, what could it possibly be? I told her that there was someone else. I told my mom Her name and a little bit about her. She didn't disown me- but the news was not warmly received. But a year and a half later- I still know exactly what I want.
