Sophie's Coming Out Story

Love of Football and Women

By , About.com Guide

I live in the UK. I first had feelings for women when I was 13. I thought it was just a phase until I joined a girl’s football team. I loved football, it was my life.

School wasn’t my strong point and the friends I had weren’t very accepting of people and were bit of a bad crowd.

I Fell Madly In Love with a Girl

The more I got to know people at football the more I knew this wasn’t just a phase. I fell madly in love with this girl who was out and proud but eight years older then me. I thought she was sexy and amazing.

She’d had a bad past and my family and friends warned me not to be her friend. I ignored that and became very close to her. We both were attracted to each other but I wasn’t any where near ready to come out. I could barely admit it to myself.

I Finally Come Out

Then after about eight months of knowing her we talked things through. I admitted I liked her a lot and I admitted to her that I was a lesbian. She comforted me and helped me through everything. She didn’t make a move and told me we could take it at my speed.

Telling My Parents

I didn’t want a relationship until my parents knew. Shortly after I told my parents, they disowned me. Then I told everyone else and I am now out and proud still playing for the football team.

I have also been seeing the girl from football one year today! Although I haven’t spoken to my parents for just over a year, I live happily with my girlfriend and it’s brought us closer.

It is one of the most horrible things in the world losing friends and family over something you have no control over, but it’s even worse living a lie because you will never be happy. When you are not happy your friends and family are never really happy anyways.
