Chosen Family

By Kathy Belge, About.com

Definition: A chosen family are those people who are close to us, that we consider family, even if we have no biological ties. Many gay and lesbian people regardless of their relationships with their birth families, have friends and often ex-lovers they consider part of their chosen family.
Examples: Shirley considers her ex-lover, her new partner and their children as her chosen family.
