- Make sure you're eligible.
To get married in Vermont you must both be at least 18 years old, not in another marriage or civil union, not be closely related and be of sound mind. If you are under 18, but over 16, you must get parental permission to marry.
Obtain a marriage license from town clerk.
Vermont residents must get a license from the town clerk where they reside. Out of state residents may go to any town clerk for a civil union license. Only one member of the couples needs to apply. The fee is $23.
Solemnize the marriage.
After obtaining your license you must find someone to perform your ceremony. A supreme court justice, a superior court judge, a district judge, a judge of probate, an assistant judge, a justice of the peace or an ordained or licensed member of the clergy residing in Vermont can perform your wedding ceremony. Out of state clergy must be granted permission to perform the marriage.
Return the certified license to the town clerk.
Have the person who performed your marriage sign the license. You have ten days to return the license to the town clerk to be registered.
Live happily ever after.
