President Bush and the Supreme Court Nominees
Since President Bush has sided often with conservatives and is against such things as gay marriage, gay and lesbian activists are concerned that he will nominate Supreme Court judges who mirror his conservative and religious views. Pro-Choice and abortion activists are especially concerned, as the freedom for women to choose whether or not to have a baby could decided again in the Supreme Court.
What Can I do?
So, what can the average American citizen do to influence the Supreme Court nominations? The following organizations are all working to ensure that the rights of women and gays and lesbians are not overlooked in the Supreme Court nominee process.
1. Lambda Legal: Lambda's web site has excellent information about how the judicial nomination process works and which courts decide which kinds of cases. They have information about potential and current nominees and easy email action forms.
2. The Human Rights Campaign is working hard to ensure that "fair minded judges" are elected to the Supreme Court. Their web site helps people determine who will be "fair minded" and breaks down the records of nominees in terms that are concise and easy to understand. They also have an easy email form for you to contact your Senators.
3. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has an email alert that you can sign up to for to stay informed up to the minute about actions that you can take to make a difference.
4. Move On is pushing for Supreme Court nominees who will protect the rights of the American people. They also have an easy online petition that you can send directly to your Senator.
5. Planned Parenthood's goal is to make sure President Bush nominates judges who will ensure constitutional protections for all women's health, safety, and privacy. Planned Parenthood is pushing for a thorough debate before a justice is confirmed to a lifetime appointment to our nation's highest court. You can sign up in their action center and contact your Senator via their web page.
