Out and Around: A Journey:
Lisa Dazols and Jenni Chang are a lesbian couple from San Francisco who have quit their jobs and will be traveling for a year, heading on a journey to developing nations and places around where LGBT rights are just beginning to take hold. Along the way, they hope to meet other lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people and activists and share their stories with the world.
In Search of the Supergays:
Jenni and Lisa hope to meet with gay activists in the places they visit. They want to share the stories of people on the front lines in places where there is little acceptance or even knowledge of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. They will video, photograph and write about their experiences on their blog Out and Around.com
Telling Their Own Stories:
What's it going to be like traveling from one of the most gay-friendly places on the planet (San Francisco) to places where homosexuality is still considered a crime? In addition to telling the stories of the people they meet, Jenni and Lisa will share what it's like for them, as Americans witnessing (and perhaps experiencing) discrimination.
Lisa and Jenni Then:
Lisa worked for years as a HIV/AIDS social worker. Jenni was an executive at Ebay. They had both already traveled extensively before they met and dreamed of seeing the world together. They decided life was too short to put their dream off until "someday" and started planning for their year-long journey.
Lisa and Jenni Now:
In July 2011 Lisa Dazols and Jenni Chang will set out on the first leg of their journey. Along the way, they will video and photograph the people they meet who are making a difference in the world for LGBT rights. You can follow along on their blog Out and Around
A Journey Like No Other:
Even before leaving San Francisco, Lisa and Jenni have begun to collect stories of LGBT movers and shakers. They've interview Kate Kendell
from the National Center for Lesbian Rights, SF mayoral candidate Bevan Dufty
and trans musician StormMiguel Florez
Lisa said, "I’m really excited to interview Supergays around the world to tell stories of hope within our community. This is how we move forward and inspire others who feel that they are alone."
Where will Lisa and Jenni go? The two decided to go to countries where they could speak the language and be able to communicate with the communities they encounter. Lisa is fluent in Spanish and Jenni is fluent in Chinese and of course, both speak English.
Their tentative itinerary includes visits to New Zealand, Australia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, China, Nepal, India, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru.
If you know gay superheros from any of these countries, they would love to hear from you.
