We saw a lot of progress in 2008 for the LGBT community.
11. Lesbian On, then Off Grey's Anatomy
Lesbian characters on primetime TV were pretty scarce this year. But the one bright spot was the budding relationship between doctors Callie and Erica on Grey's Anatomy. It was sweet to see two women who had only dated men before struggle with a same-sex attraction. But the thing was just getting started, when BOOM, Brooke Smith, the actor who played Erica was canned. Just like that. And we're all left hanging. And wanting for lesbian characters on TV.
12. Poet Laureat Named and She's a Lesbian
Kay Ryan, an out lesbian from California was named the 16th Poet Laureate of the United States. Under a Bush administration. Pretty impressive.
13. Man Gives Birth to Child
Although not "Lesbian" news, the pregnancy of Thomas Beatie does fall under the LGBT banner. Thomas Beatie is a transgender man who gave birth this year and later announced he is pregnant again. Beatie stirred up the debate in America about what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman. And reaffirmed the right of every person to do with their body as they choose.
