Because she wants to do what she can to help stop teen bullying, Kristy McNichol, a teen actress who played tomboy "Buddy" on the TV show Family in the 1970s came out as a lesbian in 2012, just before she is about to turn 50. Her publicist told People magazine "She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different."

Kristy McNichol won two Emmy Awards in 1977 and 1979 for role as "Buddy" in the hit TV drama Family. As a tomboy, Kristy McNichol had a following of lesbian fans, even though there were no out lesbian celebrities at that time. Women who are about the same age McNichol is now (50) often list her as someone they had a crush on when they were growing up.
