We're monogamous, do we have to practice safe sex?

By , About.com Guide

Question: We're monogamous, do we have to practice safe sex?

Yes, just because you and your partner are not sleeping with anyone else at the moment, does not mean that you're safe. These are the guidelines sex experts suggest your follow:

Answer: For the first six months of your relationship, use a latex barrier every time you have sex. This includes condoms on sex toys. After six months, you should both have pap smears and STD blood tests. If you both come back negative for STDs then you can stop using protective barriers.

However, if one of you has a viral STD like herpes, HIV or Hepatitis C then you need to continue to use latex barriers. If you have a bacterial infection like Chlamydia, then use barriers until the infection is cleared up.
