Ireen Wust - Lesbian Speed Skater:
Ireen Wüst is an Olympic speed skater from Goirle, Netherlands. She came out in October 2009 to TVM Helden magazine by saying that she has a girlfriend and is very happy.
Gold Medal Performer:
In 2006 Ireen Wust became the youngest Dutch gold medalist at a Winter Games when she won the the 3000 meter in Turino at age 19. She also won a bronze medal in 2006 for the 1,500 meters. Wust won again in Vancouver 2010 in the women's 1,500 meter speed skating.
It's Not About the Girlfriend:
After coming out Ireen Wust was tired of the media asking about her girlfriend, short track speed skater Sanne van Kerkhof. She was getting ready for the Olympics and wanted to focus on her sport. "I want to talk about ice skating", Wüst said in an interview. "You are not asking Sven Kramer about how his relationship is going. So why would you ask me? If I would’ve had a relationship with a guy, you wouldn’t have asked me either."
Wust Growing Up:
Ireen Wust was born April 01, 1986. She is from the southern part of the Netherlands where she grew up skating. She also played tennis and hockey, but later gave those up to focus on speed skating. She graduated from high school in 2005 and went pro that year.
Sportswoman of the Year:
Wust was named the 2006 Dutch Sportswoman of the Year. She competed in four events in the 2006 Olympics and medaled in two of them. She is competing in speed skating in the Women's 1,000 meter, 1,500, 3,000 and the team pursuit at the Vancouver 2010 games.
