The L Word: Season Two, Episode Twelve

L'Chaim

By Kathy Belge, About.com

Leisha Hailey as Alice from The L WordShowtime

Jenny pulls up in front of the Howling Coyote and inside sees her dominatrix friend from the Dungeon. See Episode 11. Jenny is getting ready to deal with her demons by stripping at a titty bar. Do you think this will drive her over the edge to true insanity, or will she work it all out and be normal next season? We can only wait and see.

It seems the rent is due and Jenny thought she would kill two birds with one stone. Deal with her demons AND pay for her housing. What happened to her job at the grocery store anyway? And I haven’t seen Shane cut hair in quite a few episodes? How do these slackers survive?

Bette Brings Melvin Home to Die

Bette has decided to bring her father home. She’s got a hospital bed in her living room and hired a nurse to help out. She’s moving Melvin into the living room, because the baby is coming in 10 days. Ten days! Do you think that’s enough time for Tina and Bette to reconcile?

Helena and the hot artist

At the Planet Helena is playing with the fingers of cute mobile artist from episode 7. Yes, the one that Bette asked out, but she had a girlfriend, which apparently she doesn’t have any more. You know lesbian relationships, so fleeting…

I guess Helena is taking this seeing other people thing pretty seriously, and assuming Tina will understand introduces her to her hot date. The cute artist wants to know if Tina is carrying Bette Porter’s baby. “I just met her recently and she’s (sigh…)” That’s right Bette Porter, sigh. But Helena can’t leave well enough alone. “Didn’t she ask you out?”

What’s the deal with Helena? Does she just want what Bette wants? Or does she want to be Bette Porter? I sure as hell hope Helena Peabody does not become the next director of the California Arts Center!

Lara & Dana’s Reunion

Dana and Alice and Tina sit down and who should appear, but Dana’s ex, the cute sous (soup) chef, Lara. Lara and Dana seem really happy to see each other. Is Dana glowing? Is Alice turning green? Lara is so proud of Dana for being so out and proud, she asks her to dinner. Alice just rolls her eyes and squirms in her chair. She’s not so happy about this reunion. But Dana, being a good girlfriend asks Alice if she would mind. “Dana, you don’t need to get permission from me to go out the dinner with your ex. You guys should be friends. Best, best friends.” I hear sarcasm in Alice’s voice. Dana does not and agrees to go out with Lara.

Bette’s Boss

Bette’s boss is visiting her at the house. He’s telling her to take care of herself and that he’s sure the board will approve a leave of absence. Bette is confused. Leave of absence? What about the Allyn Barnes retrospective? But Boss is sure Leo can handle it. Bette needs the weekend to think it over.

Helena’s next date

Helena is at the Planet wit yet another woman. This one a photographer. Tina has had enough. She says she’s tired and just wants to be home alone. But Tina doesn’t go home. She goes straight to Bette’s.

Turning Melvin

Bette is trying to turn Melvin on her own when Tina walks in. Tina offers to help. Should you be doing that when you’re only 10 days from giving birth? Bette’s distraught. She doesn’t know if she can handle her dad dying. She sits down and falls so easily and naturally into Tina’s arms that you know when it comes down to it, this is what love is about. It’s about who will hold you when your father is dying. It’s not about who will do you in front of a real estate agent. I think Tina’s beginning to see this.

Then Melvin wakes up and sees the two of them together. “Now that’s what I like to see,” Melvin says. “Promise to take good care of my girl.” Bette and Tina are quite shocked. Is this Melvin giving his blessing for their relationship of his deathbed? But then they realize it’s a delusion as Melvin continues, “And you take good care of your mother too.” He thinks Tina is Bette’s mother. It’s so sad.

Bette can’t face it. She is crying. Tina takes her to bed. She is making little gurgling sounds like she is helpless and Tina helps take her shirt off and gives her a sweet kiss. “Can we just sleep?” Bette wants to know. And they curl up in bed, Bette still in her bra, Tina in all her clothes.

The next morning Melvin has some lucid moments. He’s lecturing Kit and Bette about the importance of their careers and how Kit should not let Benjamin get away, even if he does have a wife and family. Melvin says, “It’s human nature to pursue one's happiness over someone else's misery." Kit’s not buying it. Look at your life, Melvin. "Not always, Daddy. After her mother stole you from my mother, you fell in love with someone else, didn't you, Daddy?" So Melvin’s secret is revealed.
