Recap of The L Word, Episode 13 Page 2
“Lacuna”

Shane from The L WordShowtime

Bette Mourns Melvin

Bette is going through old photos of her Dad getting ready for the memorial service. It looks like Kit and her son have finally made up, as he is seated next to his Mom. Among the celebrities at the service is Gloria Steinem. Turns out Melvin and Gloria were good friends. Mark is taping the service.

At the Planet for the reception, Dana and Lara are flirting while Alice watches. Poor Alice just hasn’t been herself since Lara showed back up on the scene. In a fit of insecurity she asks Dana to move in with her. “What? Are you serious?” Dana looks confounded. Dana says she doesn’t know, so Alice immediately asks, “Do you want to see other people?” What? Okay, is Alice freaking out or what?

Franklin & Leo

Bette’s boss Franklin and her new co-worker Leo come to pay their last respects to Melvin. When Bette asks for a few days off, Franklin lays it on her that the board has decided to buy out her contract. Fired at your father’s funeral. Can it get worse than that?

Gloria Steinem

Mark is asked to tape the Gloria Steinem’s talk later that evening. Don’t these people know what Mark does when he gets a camera in his hand? And what are feminists doing letting a creep like Mark hang out with them? Is he going to tape under Gloria’s skirt and sell in on ebay? I am so scared.

Jenny, Shane, Carmen, Alice and Dana are hanging with the girls from Betty and Gloria Steinem. One of the Betty chicks is begging Gloria to sleep with her even though she knows not all feminists are lesbians. And then Jenny says not all lesbians are feminists and she gestures toward Shane. What is she saying? Shane is not a feminist? Just because she sleeps with a lot of women does not mean she is not a feminist. I kind of like how they sneak all this political conversation in, though. Subtle, not.

The Ms Foundation for Women Everyone is at the benefit for the Ms Foundation for Women. What a great organization! A really cool local organization from my town, Sisters in Action for Power, won a grant from them.

How much play is Betty going to get off of this show? Is one of them sleeping with one of the producers? First the theme song. Then the sexpert on the Olivia cruise was lusting after one Betty. Another Betty was lusting after Shane. They played the Planet and now they’re headlining with Heart and Kinne Starr, two amazing bands. I say, let’s have more Heart, less Betty in Season 3. Start a letter writing campaign.

Shane takes Carmen to the concert in a nice new jeep. Last I knew Shane was driving an old beat up truck. And she hasn’t worked in a while and seems to be having trouble coming up with the rent. Hmm….

Scourge of the Universe

Helena is inappropriately smooching with Lea in the lobby of the concert. Helena asks her if she’s ever gotten a girl pregnant, because she would look amazing pregnant. Maybe we should have a baby together, Helena proposes. So, is that it? Helena has a thing for pregnant women? It’s all too weird for me.

Bette walks up and calls Helena the scourge of the universe. Lea looks embarrassed to be there with Helena. Bette wants to know if Helena ever even cared about Tina because if she did, she would have never gotten Bette fired. But Helena insists she had nothing to do with it. Yeah, we believe that.

Carmen comes and interrupts. Tina needs Bette now. Tina is in the bathroom staring a puddle on the floor. Her water broke and it’s time to go have the baby! Woo Hoo!

Gloria Steinem is talking about the revolution and Emma Goldman and the guy in the White house who represents all the religious extremists people came to this country to escape. But the thing is, I’ve seen Gloria Steinem speak. She is really dynamic. Who is this drone? I hope she’s not on Prozac.

One person who is not on Prozac is Nancy Wilson from Heart. Her t-shirt says “Get your kids off Prozac.” More subversive politics. I like that! Regardless, Heart is amazing. Even Jenny thinks so. I start think she’s having some kind of feminist musical healing as she stares up at Ann Wilson from the front row. Yes, Heart, better than any tent revival. But, see Mark must have got the camera in his hand because I see an under the skirt shot of Nancy Wilson as she kicks along to her amazing guitar riff.
