The L Word: Season Two, Episode Two
The Lap Dance

By , About.com Guide

Laurel Holloman plays Tina on The L WordShowtime

Tina visits a lawyer, guest star Jane Lynch, the leading gay civil rights attorney in Los Angeles. The famous lawyer chides Tina and calls her “the little wife.” How could she? “You gave up your autonomy in a relationship that the law doesn’t recognize,” lawyer lady says while throwing stick-em balls at a uterus model on the wall. That’s something you don’t see everyday.

Tina is obviously distrustful of the lawyer, yet divulges to her that she’s pregnant—even before she tells Bette or her friends. Okay, Tina’s living with Alice and somehow she’s managed to hide the big prego belly from her. Alice is a journalist. She’s supposed to be observant. How do they expect us to believe this? We are lesbians. We notice if someone uses a new hair product! Somehow I get the sense that Shane knows Tina’s pregnant, but, being the cool character she is, won’t say anything.

Speaking of Shane. She is pissed off that Tina’s seeing a lawyer. Bette and Tina don’t need that shit, she says. Like any of us do. But it is kind of touching the way Shane sticks up for Bette. Being the playgirl she is, I guess it’s easy for her to forgive an affair. And it’s kind of sweet, how she, sworn off relationships forever, can be rooting so hard for the stable couple in the group. And later when the girls are all out to a restaurant and Bette comes in for take-out, it’s Shane that runs up to her and says she’s sorry like three times and admits how much it sucks. Later Shane visits and has a beer on the porch with Bette.

At least Tina is starting to look better. She’s stopped being quite so mousy and is spouting about wanting her autonomy. She even agrees to go along for a lap dance with Shane and the gang. But again, do we really believe no one can see she’s pregnant? And where in 2005 did she get that Guatemalan poncho? I thought the girls on this show were supposed to be fashionable.

Coffee Connection

The Planet is closed and Shane and Alice wander into another coffee shop. Shane has no idea what to order. Luckily control freak Tonya comes in at just that moment and orders for Shane. And for her and Dana. After all, she knows what Dana wants even more than Dana does. (Except for knowing that Dana wants Alice—even if Dana is still trying to pretend that she doesn’t).

Butches

Finally we see a few butches on this episode of The L Word. The first is Clayborne, Robin’s ex. But we only learn about her because she is screwing another girl while Robin is exiting the church after their wedding. Yes, Robin & Clayborne’s wedding. Maybe Robin and Clayborne should have discussed monogamy versus non-monogamy before they walked down the aisle. And now it’s looking like Robin wants to get hitched up with Jenny. But back to the butches… Kit pays a visit to Ivan’s shop and meets a cute young butch named Dax who works at there. Ivan is nowhere to be found and Dax has some 1950s pompadour hair-do. So, that’s what butches in L.A. look like? Cute! Kinda like Chloe Sevigny in If These Walls Could Talk 2.
