Top 6 Lesbian Moments of the 79th Annual Academy Awards

And the Oscar Goes to…? In our household, the Oscars might as well as be a religious ceremony. We prepare for the Oscars like some people prepare for Christmas, with obnoxious decorations, a gluttonous amount of food and beverage, the requisite family in-fighting. This year felt magical, like a lesbian fantasy. From Ellen to Helen, the girls more than represented. Here are my top five lesbian moments of the evening.

1. Ellen, Ellen, Ellen

How much do we love Ellen? She's achieved one name status, much like Cher or Madonna. Cute, sexy, fun, adorable, she was these adjectives and more throughout the evening. Unlike other hosts, Ellen mixed with the crowd, took photos with Clint, offered Marty a screenplay, vacuumed Penelope's dress. She embraced her lesbianism, poking fun at George Clooney, "Who will not accept the fact that we will never be together,” and reminding the million plus viewers, “If there weren’t blacks, Jews, and gays, there would be no Oscars.” Where would we be without her pioneering efforts? Oh and how hot was she in her lesbian tuxes!

2. Melissa and Tammy

Speaking of pioneers, there wasn’t a dry eye in our house, when Melissa, upon receiving her award for best Original Score, thanked her “incredible wife, Tammy, and their four children.” They shared a sweet kiss on camera and it’s clear their devotion to one another. Melissa’s performance of “I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth was chilling, her smoky growl a vital call for America to change and evolve. Anyone else want Al and Melissa for 2008?

3. Jodi

Jodie Foster, in my opinion, is one of the most elegant and eloquent stars of Hollywood. She floated in her gorgeous Vera Wang. Faced with a difficult presenter task, she paid tribute to the stars that have passed. Her voice quivered slightly at the memory of her friend, Randy Stone. Not one to reveal her emotions publicly, it was a rare and welcome moment of vulnerability. If only Jodie could reveal more of her private life, including her relationship with partner, Cydney Bernard, and their two sons. Ask and tell, Jodie, ask and tell.

4. Betty & Portia

Yes, America, gay people have sexy girlfriends and adoring mothers. How incredibly moving was it to see pans of Portia and Betty in the audience, looking on with such love and pride. Ah, family.

5. The Queen

Ok, ok. Helen Mirren is not a lesbian, but she is lesbian-friendly and certainly, the object of a lot of lesbian lust and attention. Prime Suspect, anyone? Sultry and sensual at 61, she never fails to tease, I mean, please. Her portrait of The Queen was exceptional, both riveting and empathetic. She shed light on such a complicated context and on such an enigmatic world leader.

6. Honorable Mentions

There were so many noteworthy moments. Jokes about Judi Dench’s breasts. Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt holding hands. Al and Leo’s announcement that the Oscars have gone Green. (Come on, how lesbian is that.) Throughout, Ellen kept it breezy, casual, brilliant…and gay.
