Like The L Word: You'll Love it and You'll Hate it

L Tunes: Music From and Inspired by The L Word is an eclectic mix of music by mostly female artists. There's pop, hip hop, rap and old-school soul via Nina Simone. Like most compilations, you'll love some of the music and other songs you'll skip right over.

Lesbian Favorites: Old and New

The opening song by out lesbian artist Kirsten Price is also the stand-out song on the CD. With a smoky voice and catchy tune, you can just imagine the girls dancing at The Planet to "Magic Tree."

L Tunes has a great mix of lesbian favorite artists like Fiona Apple, Pink, Kelis, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos. I just wish there were a few more up-and-coming artists, like new-to-me The Cliks, a FTM-headed band from Toronto and their pure rock-n-roll song "Complicated."

The song best-suited to The L Word on the album is Peaches "Boys Wanna Be Her."
"The boys wanna be her
The girls wanna be her"

You can't help but think of Shane as the song plays.
Nina Simone's "Do I Move You" is sexy and sultry and you can imagine it being played to any scene with Bette getting amorous or it could be Phyllis' coming out theme song.

Just Plain Weird

Do you remember that song from like 1983? "If you wanna ride Don´t ride the white horse?" They used to play it at every lesbian bar for decades and no one knew exactly what it meant. I was excited when I thought that song was on this album. It's not, but Goldfrapp's "Ride a White Horse" is and it's just as weird.

"Now take me dancing at the Disco
Where you buy your Winniebago
I wanna ride on a white horse
I want to ride on a white horse"

Hmm... Still don't know what that means either.

You didn't think you were going to escape an L Word soundtrack without a Betty song did you?

"Don't put me out to pasture, honey, Mommy wants to ride..." Imagine lyrics like this set to a strange sci-fi track and you've got Betty's addition to L Tunes: "Barnyard."

Overall, I do like this album. It reacquainted me with some old favorites and introduced me to some new artists. And that's about all you can hope for in a compilation CD.
