Can I marry in Canada and have my gay marriage recognized in the United States?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Can I marry in Canada and have my gay marriage recognized in the United States?

Gay marriage is legal in Canada and several other countries. Does this mean you can marry your gay or lesbian partner and still have it recognized in the United States?

Answer: The answer is, it depends on where you live. The only states in the United States where gays and lesbians can legally marry are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont (beginning September 1, 2009) and Maine (beginning mid-September 2009). New York recognizes marriages by same-sex couples legally performed elsewhere.
