You see my mom does not approve of my girlfriend because she does not want me being with the same sex or being gay period. It is heartbreaking knowing my mom hates me for being this way. I talk to her about it and all she says is that she will never accept me. Her reactions and the way she talks about gay, lesbians, or bisexuals is so judgmental and it hurts even more knowing that I will have to hide my sexuality from her at least until I am 18.
My mom thinks me and my girlfriend (Lucy) are broken up because, my mom told me once before, "You better break up with her because next time I find out you are with her, I will file a report so that B#$*H can get arrested!" Mean right? I know and every time I see Lucy or talk to her I have to keep it on the down low because I would not want to see the one I love behind bars.
But mainly the question I've been wanting to ask you is, when I turn 18 and I may still be with Lucy who will be 22. Can my mom still report anything against Lucy that will cause Lucy to have problems with law, even after I am 18?
Dear Young Lover,
Wow, that is a good question. If you are having a sexual relationship with your girlfriend, then depending on the laws of your state, she can be charged with statutory rape. Even if you want to have sex with her, it doesn't matter in the eyes of the law. These laws are in place to protect young people from unwanted sexual encounters. If you want to prevent her from getting into trouble with the law, try to keep the relationship non-sexual.If you have already had sex, then your mom or anyone else can turn her in. It does not matter if you give consent. The laws are different in different states.
If you have sex with her AFTER you turn 18, there is nothing illegal about that, but that doesn't mean your mom can't turn her in for what happened before you turned 18.
I can't really advise you what to do, but you and your girlfriend should talk about the risks and consequences of being involved with each other. Is it worth it to her to be with you if she can go to jail? Is it worth it to you?
