I Came Out to My Parents Three Times

How did you come out to your parents?

Well, I came out three times, all about a year ago when I was 15. The first a failure, the second and third successful. (two for my mom, one for dad.) The first was when me and my mother were having a heated debate over something, and the second and third time were deliberate attempts at coming out. The first being in my dad's van, and the other in the kitchen.

What did you say?

Well, the first time, I casually mentioned that I was bisexual, (which at the time I thought I was) to which my mother responded, "No you're not" and quickly moved on with the conversation. My mother is, by the way, a radical christian. Coming out to my dad was much easier. I simply mentioned I liked girls and he was totally cool with it. The third was by FAR the hardest though. In the end I just walked up to my mother and said. "Mom.... I like girls. Really." Of course she isn't and wasn't accepting of it, and frankly my father thinks its just a phase, but they don't dog me about it, so it's cool.

Advice

  • I wouldn't suggest doing it on a whim. Set aside an actual talk you want to have so that your parents recognize that you're serious about what you're saying.
  • Sometimes, they just aren't going to understand.
  • Sometimes, it's better not to bug them too much about said understanding.
