I Had Four Parents to Tell

How did you come out to your parents?

I had to come out to each parent individually, all four of them.

Over the span of time from 14-yrs-old to nearly 17.

What did you say?

The first was my Dad, one day I just suddenly felt the urge to tell him so I turned to him and said "Hey Dad, so, um, I have a girlfriend." His response? "I don't care if you have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, still NO sex." End of conversation

Next was my Mom. Technically my older brother came out for me. He told her on his way to the airport to go to boot camp. He told me in a letter a few weeks later that "couldn't leave me unprotected."

Third was my (ex) Stepfather. I brought over someone and said "Oh yeah this is my Girlfriend". All he did was stare at me stunned and kinda grunted.

Most recently was my Stepmom. Apparently my Dad was tired of my putting it off so he told her and I clarified by telling her about my current girlfriend and she was just happy to be let in on my little secret.

So with the exception of my Jerk ex Stepfather, they are all really excepting and supportive.

Advice

  • Don't ever ask one parent to hide it from another. It is unfair to them.
  • Try to tell them before someone else does. It sounds better coming from your own mouth.
  • Be prepared for questions.
