How did you come out to your parents?

I told my mom when I was 16 the day me and my first girlfriend broke up. I was absolutely devastated and she could tell something was up. I didn't want to tell her at first but she just kept asking what was wrong.

What did you say?

Well it was June 17 2009 and my first girlfriend broke up with me earlier that day through text messages. Julie, my ex, and I had only been dating for about two weeks but the break-up killed me. I was so sad and depressed, I loved her and still do. We had been best friends, before deciding to date, and are still great friends. So after the break up, I couldn't stand being at home, so I asked my mom if I could stay the night at one of my friend's house. She said yes and as I was getting my stuff together she asked me what was wrong and why I didn't hang out with Julie today. A thousand thoughts went through my head of how I was going to answer that. It seemed like forever but I finally blurted out because she broke up with me today. I knew my mom would be mostly understanding because she had asked me about my sexuality before and I always talked to her about The L Word, Degrassi, and South of Nowhere.

I also always talked about several of my good friends including A. Well my mom took it well and asked a few questions but that's it. My mom was very supportive when Julie told me she liked another girl three days after our breakup. I cried and stuff for a month and my mom was always there for me. I just broke up with my second girlfriend and she was really supportive.

Advice

  • Get to know how your parents feel about lesbians. I knew my mom accepted them and didn't treat them any different even though she believes it is wrong and a sin. She loves me and that's all that matters.

How nice that your mom was able to be there for you when you were grieving.
